Inaugural Cheryl Burman Award
The Hepatitis NSW Cheryl Burman Award is a new award is presented to a person, or group of people or an agency who show exceptional leadership in the NSW viral hepatitis response. The award was announced on 7 November 2013, at the 22nd Annual General Meeting of Hepatitis NSW, and was presented by Mr Brad Burman and his sons Joel and Rueben. Brad gave a heartfelt and wonderful tribute to Cheryl, former volunteer, Board member and President of Hepatitis NSW. Cheryl Burman, in whose honour this award is named, lost her long battle with and died in 2011 from hepatitis C-related liver disease. Our thoughts remain with Brad and his family, and we again thank Cheryl for her work on behalf of people living with hepatitis C. The winner of the 2013 Hepatitis NSW Cheryl Burman Award, the first time this award has been presented, is Mr GARY GAHAN, who serves as the Coordinator, Harm Minimisation and Hepatitis C Programs in the HIV and Related Programs Unit in the South East Sydney Local health District. Our congratulation, thanks and best wishes go to Gary, who truly has shown exceptional leadership, particular in the hep C response in NSW, not just in the last year, which was the period during which achievements were judged, but since 2001, when Gary entered the viral hepatitis workforce as a project officer within the ground-breaking, Commonwealth-funded HepCare co-ordinated care trial in the Northern Sydney and Central Coast Area Health Services. Since then, Gary has been and remains at the cutting edge of viral hepatitis health promotion services in NSW.
